There is nothing more dangerous in America than a politically ambitious prosecutor. This has been demonstrated over and over again. A rising party star stuck in a mid level elected position just waiting for that one big indictment or case that will send his or her stock soaring.
The former governor of New York is one shining example. A zealot with high morals Hell bent on cleaning up everything and everyone. Spitzer found his cases and built his reputation by slapping around Wall Street and for my money some of those boys got what they deserved.
There were however, a lot of other cases including prostitution cases that the "steamroller" was involved in. Allegedly, during the time he was a moral crusader he also was spending outrageous sums on exactly the same "crime" he was trying to put other people behind bars for.
What the heck was this guy thinking? Eighteen and a half million people knew his face in New York and so did the Washington press corp, did he think he was that non descript? Or was he that much a risk taker?
The sheer embarrassment as well as a career left in ruins is enough public punishment for Spitzer. His real great personal punishment is this hypocrisy exposes the the man inside. He was made small by the fact that at his moment of national embarrassment he couldn't take the heat alone. You think he would have had enough integrity to spare his wife the glare of his public ridicule. No, instead he has her standing up at the podium as the dutiful political wife standing by her man. He could have handled a resignation by himself.
Beware the politician that rises to prominence by prosecuting others.
